BUAD 290 - Financial Services Industry

This course will introduce students to the institutional framework of financial markets and to the major sectors of the financial services industry. We will study the role of financial institutions in our economy and in our society. We will explore the role played by major US and international financial institutions in the latest global financial crisis, and contrast this with other similar periods in US and world history. The course will have a significant current events component and will address contemporary issues of public policy concern, including industry regulation, corporate governance and professional ethics. This course will require extensive written communication of various types, most notably a course journal demonstrating an understanding of how financial institutions work and a final essay addressing a selected inter-disciplinary topic of relevance to our course, with reference to world history, current events and public policy. The course will utilize learning resources of various types including financial journalism, government filings, documentary and dramatic film, historical records, and academic and other writings. The course will also feature selected guest speakers from various sectors of the financial services industry.
