(3) This course surveys the major themes of United States foreign affairs from the formation of the republic through the First World War. Topics include: foreign policy in the Revolutionary War, Hamiltonian vs. Jeffersonian approaches, the War of 1812, the Monroe Doctrine, continental expansion and War with Mexico, foreign policy during the Civil War, Caribbean and Pacific expansion, the First World War, and the League of Nations debate.
