(3) This course covers the African-Americans from the Reconstruction period to the present time. Topics included are the ending of slavery, the economic and political transition following it, the emerging debate over the role of the African-American in American life, the struggle for political and legal equality and the social and cultural development of African-Americans in the twentieth century.
