(3) This course surveys the history of Middle Eastern societies during the medieval and early-modern eras with an emphasis on the rise of Islam and its world historical context. Topics include the development and spread of Islam, the Caliphate and its demise, the Crusades, the Mongol empires, and the rise of Turkish power culminating in the Ottoman and Safavid Empires.
