ANTHRCUL 536 - Politics/Aesthetics

Description
Politics/Aesthetics --- This course explores the complex relations between expressive culture and the exercise of power. It includes full-length monographs on the performance of secularism in contemporary Turkey, urban experience in Kinshasa, and the 'theater state' in Ball. We examine the proposition that the politics of artistic creation and the aesthetic elements of political rhetoric and practice are interrelated as two moments in a dialectic.
