LING 3040 - Topics in Linguistics

This course looks at theoretical and descriptive issues in historical and comparative linguistics with a focus on phonology. Topics include Proto-Indo-European, transition laws, comparative reconstruction, internal reconstruction, mechanisms of language change, and issues in the history of Germanic and Slavic. Prerequisites: One of the following courses: Introduction to Linguistics, History of the English Language, Introduction to Phonology, Phonological Analysis, or consent of the instructor. Requirements: Attendance, short homework assignments, two midterm exams and a final exam. Materials: Handouts provided by the instructor as well as book chapters and papers available on ICON. There is no textbook for this course; the closest recommended reading would be Hans Hock, Principles of Historical Linguistics (any edition).
