LING 3001 - Introduction to Linguistics

Description
This course introduces students to the scientific study of human language, assuming no prior study of either individual languages or linguistics itself. The course explores the various components of the complex system which makes up language: morphology (word structure), phonetics and phonology (sound systems), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and historical linguistics (language change). In-class lectures and discussion are supplemented by a variety of recommended readings which will be available online. Requirements include graded homework assignments and graded quizzes and exams.
