THR 238 - The Art of Stand-up

Description
Comedian Maysoon Zayid will transform students from boring to hilarious in under 14 weeks. Each comic will leave this class with a ready for primetime, original stand-up comedy set. The class will tackle how comedy intersects with under represented groups, how to make fun of your family and deal with being disowned, song parodies and politics, and will culminate in a final comedy show on campus. Maysoon Zayid is an actress, comedian, writer, and disability advocate. She is the co-founder of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival and The Muslim Funny Fest. She was a full-time On Air Contributor to Countdown with Keith Olbermann and a columnist for The Daily Beast. As a professional comedian, Maysoon has performed in top New York clubs and has toured extensively, and is a recurring character on General Hospital. Students will watch and analyze two to three hours of comedy each week, including Andrew Dice Clay, Hasan Minhaj, Janeane Garofolo, Awkwafina, Katt Williams, Chelsea Handler, Sarah Silverman, Dave Chapelle, Margaret Cho, Whoopi Goldberg, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro and many others. Each week students will write and rehearse a new five minute original comedy set. The final project is an original stand up comedy set to be performed at a comedy show on campus.
