MED 416 - The Book in the Latin West

This course offers a survey of the book in the Latin West, its cultural history and its functions as both object and text. It discusses production, readership and censorship, from antiquity up until the printing revolution. There will be two 20-minute quizzes in all (week 6 and 11), a paper and a three-hour final exam. The quizzes will be given at the beginning of a class and will cover the assignments from all previous classes. The paper is due on Dean's Date. Students are expected to be prepared for each class: the relevant readings will be made available on Blackboard in advance.
