SOC 66900 - Philosophical Bases Of Social Theory

Description
Social theory always presupposes background philosophical commitments that orient, inform, and direct how theory is justified and constructed. Greater knowledge of some of the key background philosophical influences on social theory can help students better understand the nature, focuses, and limitations of various theoretical approaches. This workshop will read some key works that have implications for how sociologists might conceive of theoretical agendas, including seminal books by Alistair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, Michael Polanyi, and works in personalist social theory.
