SOC 34955 - Ocean and Marine Politics

Description
This course explores some of the politics that happens at sea. The syllabus is built around three pillars: fishery politics and fisheries management disputes; marine natural resources regimes and ocean renewables; understanding irregular and traditional conflict at sea. The course also explores various theoretical perspectives, in particular, literature that stresses the 'social construction' of the sea, and the concept of 'resilience'. Also explored are methodological questions, or how should we study a politics of the sea? Here the focus is on exploring to what extent qualitative ethnographic methods can help understand complex marine based activities.
