Taught in ND Tokyo, Japan abroad program. After reviewing dominant models in Japanology, this course will focus on recent attempts to capture the complexity of Japanese society and to (re)construct appropriate frames of reference for its study. Topics include national identity, social difference, and the politics of representation in Japanese studies. Extended student presentations, a midterm test, and a final paper are expected. Normally offered every year.
