This skills-based course includes a study of spring sustainable crop production practices, including but not limited to vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, and cut flowers. Topics can include variety selection, production methods, soil testing and amendment, and various record keeping procedures, such as those needed for organic certification. Students will gain knowledge of crop production appropriate to the spring season in the Great Lakes bioregion. Course incorporates off-campus outdoor living classrooms and is a service learning course. Class Notes: Note: This Service Learning course is held at Second Spring Farm, 16055 Cowley Road, Grafton, OH 44044. Student must provide own transportation, bag lunch and water. Students should expect many hands-on farming activities will be labor intensive and will take place outdoors. Students should be able to lift at least 35 lbs, walk at least 2 miles, and work in the sun for 3 to 4 hours at a time. Typical work clothing, including closed-toed shoes or rubber boots and gardening gloves is required. This course has computer component; student must have internet access to complete the course requirements (i.e. CANVAS activities, online homework, etc.).Note: Due to cold weather, this lecture meets in Room LS208 on the LCCC Elyria campus the first 3 weeks of class (Feb 19, Feb 26 & Mar 4). Beginning Wednesday, March 11, 2020, lecture moves to Second Spring Farm in Grafton. Enrollment Requirements: None.
