AMST 100 - American Dreams: Amer Themes

This course introduces students to interdisciplinary modes o f analyzing the American experience. Core readings across di sciplines (including those on urbanization, Philadelphia, an d the cultural legacy of Charles Willson Peale) will be supp lemented by instruction and practice in various research str ategies including oral history, use of AMST-related data bas es, and critical deconstruction of primary sources, both pri nt and non-print, focusing especially on the intersection of race, ethnicity, class, and gender. A culminating project w ill require students to select one decade from American cult ure and to examine the prevailing and competing beliefs and values depicted in both formal and popular culture. Open to non-majors; no prerequisites.
