CLASPHIL 259 - Venantius Fortunatus

Description
Participants in this seminar will gain methods for studying rival intellectual traditions by exploring the work and life of Venantius Fortunatus, often called "the last poet of antiquity." In reading him alongside his contemporaries, we will treat him as a case study within a dynamic and rapidly developing political and artistic landscape. Topics to be discussed include late ancient attitudes to friendship and gender; the role of the Roman past in Merovingian political life; Christian use of classical literature; the influence of poetry on Western monasticism and religious practice.
