CLSS 276 - Drama of Ancient Greece

Description
What are the origins of drama? In this course, undergraduates will engage with the diverse dramatic art of Ancient Greece. We will read in translation plays drawn from the many performance genres of the ancient Mediterranean, including works by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes. In discussing these plays we will examine the conventions of tragedy and comedy; the social, economic, and political context of drama throughout its history; costume, mask, and set design; music and dance; modern performances of ancient plays; the art of translation; and the continuing relevance of live theater today. Greek drama is thriving on the contemporary stage, and we will also watch as many filmed and staged productions as possible!

Professor Catenaccio's class was intellectually challenging and productive, but also pushed students to think creatively and apply what they learned in their own way. Drama of Ancient Greece required perhaps a larger-- but healthy-- amount of reading, which lead to excellent in class discussions. Papers included analysis of dramas of our choice.

Engaging lecturer; very cool and approachable. She gives great feedback and has reasonable expectations of workload and participation. She kept each Zoom session fresh and engaging and incorporated student feedback into the format of the class. She's extremely knowledgable and has a wealth of funny anecdotes for any topic.
