HC 611 - Francis and Clare

Description
This course attends equally to the historical, real-life Francis & to the Francis of piety & legend, i.e., to the historical reception of Francis. This includes the several Lives, movements that trace their origins to Francis, and his depiction in visual art. The course explores paradoxes of the Francis phenomenon and tensions and divisions of the Franciscan movement. It also looks at two very different women in relation to the saint: Clare of Assisi & Angela of Foligno.
