CE 586 - Industrial Ecology

An exploration of the methods necessary for designing and implementing changes in manufacturing processes to increase sustainability. This course will identify the impacts associated with resource consumption and environmental pollution, and present the quantitative tools necessary for assessing enviornmental impacts and to design for sustainability. Topics include: industrial ecology, life cycle analysis and the integration of the environment into economic activities. (1 credit of design) Prerequisites: prior college level exposure to the concepts of mass and energy conservations, one of the following: CE340, CH250, ES330, ES340, CH301, CH271 or consent of the instructor. Class Notes: In-person instruction is augmented with web-based online learning. Students participate in the class in real-time at scheduled intervals determined by the course instructor. All students are expected to participate in the class at the same time.
