MEDIA 480 STUDIES IN MEDIA THEORY (3-0-3)(F/S). Critical evaluation of contemporary theoretical trends and issues in the study of mass media. Content varies from semester to semester. Course may be repeated for credit. PREREQ: MEDIA 201. Class Notes: DESCRIPTION: This course examines the convergence of sport and film. Both play an integral role in shaping and reflecting American culture. Together, they provide a significant site for the study of social issues that include equality, diversity, social change and individuality. The course will focus on Hollywood narrative sports films of the past century, and what those portrayals can tell us about the larger society. Extensive viewing of films outside the class will be required. Enrollment Requirements: Prerequisite: MEDIA 201.
