POLSCI 147F - Contemporary French Politics: the Republican Model in Transition

Description
French political life has long gravitated around a "Republican model" marked by an unmediated relationship between the citizen and the state, socialization into French values through secular public education, a special vocation for France on the international stage, and an activist state. Recent developments have called the Republican model into question. This course will examine the transformation of France's Republican model - its origins, operations, and responses to contemporary challenges.

Professor Levy was the best professor I've had at Cal so far. His lectures are extremely clear and well thought out, and you can tell that he genuinely cares about the topic and his students. He reads off a script for lecture, but that was not an issue because he was still an engaging speaker and his lectures contained material beyond his slides.

Overall this class seems harder than it really is. There is a lot of reading but you don't have to do it all to pass the course. The readings help you in discussion and it's important you do some of it and attend lecture to understand the topics of the course. If you're interested in France or Western European politics, this course is for you.
